September 19, 2015, Kenyan President Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta, Chinese ambassador to Kenya Mr. LIU Xianfa, China COMMUNICATIONS Construction Co Ltd CEO Mr. CHEN Fenjian, China Road and Bridge Corporation chairman Mr. WEN Gang attended the foundation laying ceremony of South Nairobi railway station project and witnessed the signing of contract of the construction of the Mombasa – Nairobi railway extension line (from Nairobi to Naivasha).

The original design of the Mombasa – Nairobi railway is about 480 km, from the east of the port city Mombasa, to the west of Nairobi. The total cost of the project is 3.8 billion dollar and 90% of the cost is loans provided by the China Import and Export bank. After the completion of this project, the travel time from Mombasa to Nairobi will be reduced from 10 hours to 4.5 hours.

The construction of the Mombasa – Nairobi railway extension line is 120 kilometers from the capital of Nairobi to Naivasha area, the construction costs 1.483 billion dollar and the construction period is 54 month.
